An investigation of fundamentals of applied social science research focusing on research processes; theory construction and hypothesis development; basic choices in research design including focus group interviews, case studies, ethnography, survey research and experimentation; sampling design; measurement and instrument design; reliability and validity in measurement, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

AD 601 Multivariate Data Analysis

An investigation of various multivariate analysis techniques and research problems addressed by each technique with a model building and validation emphasis. Coverage of multiple regression, multivariate analysis of variance, canonical correlation, cluster analysis, conjoint analysis, multidimensional scaling, causal path analysis, and structural equation modeling.

Applications involving competitive strategy choice in oligapolistic interaction, auctions, price discrimination, etc. Cooperative games and solution concepts. Discussion of issues related to organizational effectiveness, contextual influences upon organizations, structural arrangements, and organizational processes. Major perspectives in organization theory: Contingency, resource dependence, population ecology, institutional, economic, interpretive, critical and post-modern approaches. Review and discussion of ongoing debate and controversy.

AD 628 Contemporary Organizational Analysis: Actors and Institutions

In depth investigation on theoretical background information in multidisciplinary areas for the analysis of consumer/marketing problems, on the merits and demerits of diverse viewpoints on consumer policies and on the evolution and measurement of comprehensive consumer behaviour models. Current consumer issues including consumer protection, "green" consumers, healthcare, societal impacts of marketing operations, and ethical considerations.

AD 654 Decision and Game Theory

Comprehensive coverage of available theories of decision-making (choice) under risk and uncertainty. Includes expected utility concepts, multi-criteria decision making approaches like AHP: Analytical Hierarchy Process and group decision; voting schemes and theory; decision-making in situations with multiple actors, i.e. game theory, including modeling of strategies, reactive strategies and repeated games.

Hierarchical production planning and control for both manufacturing and service industries: Aggregate planning, aggregation of output, capacity and resources and inputs, sales & operations planning, disaggregation into families, master operations scheduling, rough-cut capacity planning, materials requirements planning, capacity requirements planning, MRP II, loading, sequencing, detailed scheduling and dispatching. Mathematical models for planning and control.

AD 656 Forecasting Methods

The use of forecasting in marketing, finance and operations functions.  Aggregation in forecasting, measuring the accuracy of forecasts, subjective/judgemental forecasting methods, new product forecasting, quantitative/statistical forecasting methods.Causality, time-series forecasting methods, financial series modeling, demand forecasting, pyramid forecasting, effects of outliers and structural change. Cost of forecasting, forecasting software, selecting a forecasting method, combinations of forecasts. Simulation and experimental design issues.

AD 657 Project Management

Project activity precedence relationship forms, network diagrams for visualizing projects, the project evaluation and review technique, critical path management, including the case of stochastic activity durations. LP: Linear Programming  and MIP: Mixed Integer Programming formulations for project estimating, budgeting, planning and controlling. Competitive bidding on projects and game-theoretic and dynamic programming bidding models.

Managerial problems raised by production, inventory and distribution. State of the art in logistics systems research. Single product-single location, continuous and periodic review models.  Deterministic and stochastic demand, multi product-multi location models with centralized or decentralized information modes. Transportation, transhipment, vehicle routing and dispatching research with combined location, distribution & inventory problems and their applications in services (banking, food services, etc.). Newer directions inspired by Japanese approaches to logistics management and new developments (automation, integration) in manufacturing technology.
