By drawing on the notion of absorptive capacity, specifically external absorptive capacity meta-routines, we suggest that different forms of openness are inter- dependent, with context playing a role in this interdependence. We ask whether broad or deep search that reflect on different meta-routines are more appropriate for emerging economy firms when they collaborate with developed and other emerging economy partners. In a study of Turkish firms, we find that the meta-routine associated with deep search is appropriate for collaboration with developed economy partners. In contrast, the meta-routine associated with broad search is appropriate for collaboration with other emerging economy partners.
